I've received the DS fabrics I ordered! I'm leaning toward a kaleidoscope type pattern with a white background, but I'm not completely sure yet. I have a few more prints from FMF on the way - an early birthday present from my husband! (My birthday is Apr 27th.)

WIP Wednesday the Second

Ongoing:
Last night I wanted to start sewing the sashing for the blocks of my Stained quilt; I have strips cut from the remnant of Kona black I happened to have (I'll probably have to buy more to finish between the blocks).

I pulled out my sewing machine, plugged it in and opened the little attachment case where my bobbins are stored. I only have 4... and they all have bits of other colors left on them at the moment. It seems wasteful to just unravel one, so that's another thing I need to buy.

Since the first quarter of Rhonda's Finish Along is almost over, I pulled out the pieces for my purple haze quilt and trimmed them all. I started with 5" charm squares cut from yardage, but when I sewed them back together I had some trouble keeping accurate 1/4" seams, especially considering that flannel is prone to more stretching than the typical quilter's cotton.

I think chances are slim that I will finish this quilt by the end of the month as I had set out for myself in Jan, but at least I've made a bit of progress! And I've got one finish in for this quarter anyway.

Better late than never

I'm joining the Finish-A-Long hosted by Rhonda over at Quilter in the Gap!

Here are the things I am carrying over from 2011. Of course I meant to finish them sooner, but better late than never.

1. My grown up shower curtain. (Replacing the rubber ducky one I had in college, mostly because the grommets got rusty.)

I worked a bit on it last night, but when I held it up to the rod I decided I actually would prefer it longer... So what I need to do is pick out what was to be the top hem and redo it much skinnier. It will then become the bottom hem to limit my time with the seamripper. Finally, I'll get to play with the buttonhole function on my sewing machine. I'm actually quite excited about this since I've never used it before. And once I have 12 buttonholes along the top it will be ready to hang.

2. The Purple Haze Quilt.

At this point, I have 70 blocks of 4 charm squares each, plus 10 pairs of charms that make up the odd number of columns in my layout. Since one of my fabrics is flannel, I've been fighting against it stretching as I go and need to trim all 70 blocks back into squares before proceeding to sew them into rows.

I have the batting and backing fabric on hand, but I'm still debating how to quilt it. It's probably easiest to do straight lines since my machine is fairly compact and this will be a twin size quilt. After I figure that out, I'll piece together binding from my scraps and a bit of extra gray I bought. Ignoring time efficiency, I'll probably opt to sew the binding to the back of the quilt by hand.

Finally! Some sewing!

I feel I'm making good progress on my first bed sized quilt top. All the charm squares have been sewn into pairs and most of those pairs have become squares again, albiet larger this time.

Here's the overall design.

I'm sure it's overly ambitious, but wouldn't it be nice to be able to lay this quilt over the bed in the guest room when we have visitors in 3 weeks? Hmm... yeah, probably not going to happen. Nice thought though.

I've also begun picking fabric for the quilt along. Here's what I have so far:

I'm planning on a white background and considering adding some solids to the mix. I'm not sure whether I would make the solids their own starts or have them mingle with the flowered prints - any thoughts or suggestions?
